(The following was written after I couldn’t sleep one night thinking about the state of the world under Trump. I apologize to those readers who might be offended by reading actual Trump quotes, but that’s kind of the point of this piece. Trump is offensive, and the media censoring or sugar-coating his words is what got us into this mess.
Thank you John and Karen for proofreading this for me and making suggestions.)
Imagine you heard your grandmother was dying and since she lives in another country thousands of miles away, it’s been years since you’ve seen her. You’ve heard it’s terminal cancer and so you scrape up enough money, and blow your vacation time to make the trip to say your final goodbyes.
Imagine you’re peacefully reading on the plane, enjoying a rare break from work, the kids, and the stress of taking care of the house. Suddenly, there is a flash of light just outside the aircraft window, immediately followed by a huge explosion that rips the aircraft in half, sending shrapnel in every direction.
Imagine you weren’t one of the lucky ones who got killed instantly by the explosion. No, you heard the back of the plane was the safest place to be in a crash, so that’s where you booked your seat. You did survive the explosion, but now you get a physics lesson in acceleration and terminal velocity.
Since the airplane was cruising at 30,000 feet, you’ll feel your shrapnel impaled body start falling, accelerating quickly until you’re falling at about 120 miles per hour, at which point you hit terminal velocity, so it’ll be another 2 minutes of screaming in pain, before the ground finally puts you out of your misery.
Imagine the reason your innocent life and those of the other 175 people on board wasn’t due to a mechanical failure, but because a surface to air missile just cut the plane in half.
Now normally you don’t have to worry about surface to air missiles when flying in a commercial aircraft.
But imagine if your country had just been attacked, and the president of that country had announced that more attacks were being planned. Imagine if right wing media announces that fighter jets and bombers are already up in the air ready to attack.
Imagine you’re sitting at the controls of an anti-aircraft missile launcher. You’ve never been this nervous, expecting bombers to fly over any minute now. You don’t want to die, not like this; you’re ready to shoot the minute you spot the planes. And you do.
Imagine that the whole reason the country was attacked in the first place was because the president called for the assassination of the second in command of another country. After the assassination the president and his staff lie repeatedly about why the assassination took place, and some evidence comes out that he was trying to curry favor with the Senators that will be judging him at his impeachment trial.
Imagine that the president was being impeached because he was using his office to extort another country by withholding needed military aid in order to get them to make up stories about his opponent in the upcoming election. Further, he obstructed Congress in trying to cover up his crimes.
Imagine that he had already been found to have obstructed justice in the pursuit of the investigation of his treason during the previous election. The election he couldn’t win honestly, because he had a long history of being a lying, racist, misogynistic criminal.
Imagine that even though during the campaign it came out that he mocked a disabled reporter, boasted about “grabbing women by the pussy” without their consent, paid off a porn star after having sex with her, and lied about all his Russian connections, including known associates that were part of the Russian mafia, you still voted for him. You certainly didn’t want to vote for the lady with the email problem who was a warmonger, right?
Imagine knowing all of this is true, that you don’t have to imagine it at all, and yet you’re still driving around with a Make America Great Again bumper sticker on your pickup truck.
Imagine not feeling any outrage at all for the daily debasement of the democratic and moral principles that made America great.
